The abbey Notre-Dame de Sénanque is a founded Cistercian abbey on June 23rd, 1148, on the territory of the commune of Gordes along Sénancole brook in the department of Vaucluse.

The Cistercian abbeys are characterized by an architecture and an ornamentation without ornaments. One finds the dormitory, the church there, the chauffoir or room of work and copy, the chapter room which was the meeting room of the community, and center the cloister crossing point of meditation and reading.

The ORDER of CISTERCIANS, is an reformed ORDER of the BENEDICTINES, whose origin goes back to the foundation of the abbey of Cîteaux by Robert de Molesme in 1098.

The ORDER OF the BENEDICTINES, was founded into 529 per saint-Benoît de Nursie (480/490-547), son of a noble Roman. RULE of SAINT BENEDICT describes the methods of clothing and daily life of the monks, and also the principal activities made of the liturgical office or joint prayer, the reading of the bible, and work intended to create autarky and to thus limit the external contacts. A life of obedience, humility, in search of God.

The CISTERCIAN RULE is the Rule of Saint Benedict applied with rigor. The Community life of the brothers is demanding in obedience with the Abbot of the monastery, in integral poverty, manual work, insulation, silence.

GORDES are a french commune, located in the department of the Vaucluse of the area Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, populated of 2092 Gordiens in 1999, distributed out of 49 km², that is to say 43 hab. /km².

Gordes is one of the most beautiful villages of France.
