Medieval cookhouse, Fontevraud-l'Abbaye

The romanesque cookhouse of Anjou of the 12th century, in the Royal Fontevraud abbey, of the 12th 15th 16th 17th 18th 19th centuries.
Stone construction, of octagonal form comprises multiple chimneys and a roof in fish scales, typical of the Romanesque art of Poitou.

Founded in 1101 by monk Breton reforming Robert of Arbrissel, abbey of Fontevraud, of style Gothic from Angers, was erected in abbey and necropolis royal by Henri II Plantagenêt king of England, independent of all monastic orders, but of benedictine inspiration, whose monks and moniales were directed as of its foundation by 36 abesses, of 1115 to 1792, of which more half were of royal blood, in chastity, obedience, silence, poverty. It was the most powerful abbey of France, and one of vastest of Europe.

After the French revolution, Napoleon the First made in 1804 the abbey a prison, which remained until 1963. The abbey is classified historic building since 1840, and is registered with the world patrimoine of UNESCO since 2000 with the whole of the cultural site of the Val of Loire.

In the abbey church, built from 1105 to 1160, are royal tombs, funerary statue XIIth century of Henri II Plantagenêt king of England died at Chinon in 1189, and the funerary statue XIII century of his wife Aliénor d'Aquitaine died at Fontevraud in 1204.

FONTEVRAUD-L' ABBEY is a french commune, located in the department of Maine-et-Loire of the area of the Pays de la Loire, populated of 1523 Fontevristes in 2007, distributed out of 14.8 km², that is to say 102.8 hab/km².

The village belongs to the Val of Loire, in the middle of the vineyards of the Saumur-Champigny and of the natural Parc regional Loire-Anjou-Touraine.
