A panoramic view of Place de la Mairie in Rennes.

Place de la Mairie is a large square in the centre of Rennes. The west side is occupied by the Mairie or City Hall (out of frame on the right in this view), the east side is occupied by Rennes Opera House (the large building on the left with the curved facade).

Rennes Opera House was unveiled to the public in 1836. Designed by Charles Millardet, it reflects the 18th-century trend for curved architecture.

The convex façade, protected by muses carved by François Lanno, hides many more original features on the inside, such as stalls on the first floor rather than in their usual position on the ground floor. The famous 44 steps to reach them made the headlines at the time.

It is one of France's smallest opera houses.
