Photographer's Note

Let cross Pont-Réan bridge to reach the north bank of river Vilaine, on Bruz side. Here is the Pont-Réan lock keeper house, a few meters downstream the bridge. River Vilaine is one of the main waterways in Brittany. It used to be navigable from Vitré but it is today navigable only from Rennes to river Vilaine estuary, at Arzal dam. River Vilaine is linked to river Rance via Ille-et-Rance canal from Rennes. This waterway network so makes it possible to sail from souht coast to north coast of Brittany without sailing in the dangerous seas off Finistère coast ! A few decades ago river Vilaine was used by barges to carry raw materials, grains and food for cattle. Today it is mainly used yachting.
