Photographer's Note

Along with its “sister houses” at Silvacane and Sénanque, the Abbey of Le Thoronet is one of the three wonders of cistercian architecture in Provence. Its construction began in 1160 and was completed indeed in 1190. During several centuries, monks lived there. With the wars of religions, the monastery was abandoned in 1614,
Partly destroyed, It is restored at the 19th century. This restoration resumed in 1907 and had continued ever since.
Perfectly located in the surrounding landscape, it is impressive by its architectural simplicity, its sobriety and by the perfection of its proportions. It should be noted that its beauty comes also from its construction with stones cut with such an exactitude as the joints are almost imperceptible.
