Photographer's Note

The castle of Chambord possesses remarkable outside architecture but is also known for its famous double staircase in the center of the donjon. He serves three floors of the castle and is constituted by the interweaving of two staircases saw it evolving around the central hollow nucleus.
In every floor around the staircase deploy four hallways forming a cross. In the second floor, wide vaults in lowered arch consisted of 400 identical boxes flood the hallways of the coat of arms of François 1st: the salamander and the famous F.

Le château de Chambord possède une architecture extérieure remarquable mais est aussi connu pour son célèbre escalier à double révolution au centre du donjon. Il dessert les trois étages du château et est constitué de l'imbrication de deux escaliers en vis évoluant autour du noyau creux central. Deux personnes empruntant chacune une volée d'escalier peuvent s'apercevoir par les ouvertures pratiquées dans le noyau mais ne se rencontrent jamais.
A chaque étage autour de l'escalier se déploient quatre vestibules formant une croix. Au deuxième étage, de larges voûtes en arc surbaissé composées de 400 caissons identiques inondent les vestibules des armoiries de François 1er : la salamandre et le célèbre F.

Je pensais aux traboules lyonnaises! De la belle architecture (on ne saurait plus faire maintenant) et l'apparition de la silhouette juste dans la zone claire! Bravo! Par contre j'urais supprimé l'homme en bas qui de face attire trop l'oeil!

I remember this château from my visit to this region of France years back. Never had time to look inside and on the strength of this exquisite B&W shot, wish I had. Looks stunning!

Tu as très bien saisi l'essence de cet escalier où finalement personne ne rencontre jamais personne. J'aime l'utilisation du noir et blanc qui apporte du caractère à l'ensemble.J'aime le plafond.

Quelle compo NB qui fait ressortir les détails de la pierre parfaitement cet immense arche qui ouvre le chemin vers ce double escaliers avec le personnages et la lumière.

Bonjour Jean Jacques,

As soon as I saw this I thought it reminded me of the "mathematical art" of the Dutch artist M.C. Escher with images like this and this. But this is a beautiful capture of a wonderful example of architectural artistry at its very best.

It is difficult to comprehend the skill and devotion of the architects who designed this and the craftsmen who built it, but this staircase is stunning and you have captured it beautifully in this monochrome image. Your composition is excellent and I particularly like the inclusion of the lady, sihouetted, disappearing into the light at the top of the stairs.

Perfect composition and exposure, lovely light, tones and contrasts and exceptional details and sharpness.

A splendid b&w image with good repetition of the recurring rectangles and ornate patterns in the ceiling arches. Good sharpness and a superb tonal range. The silhouetted woman in the doorway animates the scene and provides a nice graphic element against the lighter bg. The 2 angled staircases add dynamism. Strong and punchy light contrasts. Tfs!
