Towers of the Small City BridgernThe smallest tower, in Romanesque style, was built in the 12th century and its present appearance dates back to 1591. The highest tower dates back to 1464. The gate between the two towers was built at the beginning of the 15th century. From here you can access the Charles Bridge, the oldest of the Prague bridges. Its construction, commissioned by Charles IV, began in 1357 and ended in 1402. It was built to replace the Judith Bridge, which had been destroyed by a flood of the Vltava in 1342. The Charles Bridge consists of sandstone blocks and on both sides it is fortified by towers (the Little Town Bridge Towers and the Old Town Bridge Tower). From 1683 to 1928, 30 statues of saints were placed on the pilasters of the bridge, the most important of which is the statue of San Giovanni Nepomuceno, tradition has it that whoever rubs the bronze plate, glistening for how many times it has been touched, will return one day in the Bohemian capital.r
