Photographer's Note

Gent again. A shot of the little red boat (sounds like a children's book title, doesn't it) that has appeared in many shots taken in this wonderful city, sometimes as a mere background item. Perhaps it's been left there permanently as a colourful prop for photographers.

I was motivated to upload this photo by Alexander Pasternak's recent shot of the same building, the same red boat.

Alexander's shot was taken from the other end of the old building, the fish market, looking towards the meat market across the river Leie, and the boat played a relatively insignificant part in his composition. Mine was taken in the middle of winter, his on a sunny day in October. The red timberwork in the foreground of Alexander's shot can be seen jutting beyond the corner of the fish market in this one, which I took at 144mm focal length from the bridge seen in his photo.

In the background on the left can be seen some posters hanging outside Gent's modern art museum, advertising an exhibition.
