Photographer's Note

Among the first few photos I uploaded on TE was this one, taken while on a boat cruise on the River Leie, one gleaming (almost warm, one could say, using the term very loosely) Sunday in January. I didn't know much about sharpening, straightening or cropping then. (Who's to say I know much more now?) I deleted the photo today, but suddenly had the thought of trying to do something more with it. I cropped it savagely into a portrait orientation, desaturated for b/w finish and added a very mild sepia hue.

I found the absolute stillness of Gent, in the air and on the water, on the greyest day or the brightest, to be endlessly fascinating and calming during those winter days, and every time I look at my photos I'm struck by the quiet and windless tranquility. This very simple scene of a girl crossing the Leie by footbridge seems to have this essential quality.

I might just post the original photo, tilted and all, as a WS. Don't hesitate to tell me which you prefer!
