Photographer's Note

St. Kitts and Nevis is the youngest sovereign nation in the Americas, gaining independence in 1983. It was one of the first Caribbean island settled by Europeans and for most of its history sugar cane was the basis of its economy. As cheaper sources of sugar started to make sugar cane production less competitive, there were efforts to improve efficiency. Processing was centralized and a small gauge railroad was built in the 1920s to get the cane to the processing plant. This effort did keep sugar cane production running longer than at other islands, but it still dwindled until being completed halted in 2005. Now the railroad is used for sight-seeing tours as the St. Kitts Scenic Railway. It's a very pleasant 2-3 hour trip that circles most of the island.
