Photographer’s Note
Parque Nacional Rincón de la Vieja is situated in the northwest corner of Costa Rica; the nearest main city, not far away, is Liberia. The park covers 14,000 hectares.
The park "breathes geothermal energy," starting with the still active Volcán Rincón de la Vieja (1895 m) and including fumaroles, hot springs, mud pots, and a "young and feisty volcancito."
We visited by horseback on a daylong ride from our nearby lodging, guided by a local Costa Rican cowboy. Being inexperienced on horseback, my bottom was bruised and my legs were jelly by the end of the visit. Quite the adventure!
This photo was taken from a position near one of the fumaroles we visited. The combination of sunlight beaming through the canopy and the wispy steam creates the interesting lighting effects.

Hi william. Excellent management of light/shade, very good retention of form and detail throughout and nice composition with the darker foliage in the foreground. Regards. Klaudio.

Hi William,
The beauty of any forest is not easy to capture or convey in photo, needless to say one of this size of 5x7. But all we can do is to capture the essence of it and let the view mind to imagine and fill in the rest. I have similar images of Redwood NP and some of the Amazon Rain Forest from Ecuador. One really does have to see it for himself.
Here you have done what is needed with different layers of foliages and trees at different distance we can tell by the light and dark of the shade. The misty air is well visible due to the light that peeks through the thick forest. You don’t just fine with the low and difficult light. Only one thing is missing, where’s the monkey?
