Photographer's Note

I came by The Long Son big house quite late in the morning, it was totally quiet. After guiding me around the temple, the two religious friendly help me by posing for some quick shots in this magical ambiance.

“… Mr Tran, who settled on the island in the early part of the 20th century. When he first built his original small thatched house, he was the island’s only inhabitant and had very little money. For years his life was mainly one of hardship and odd-jobs as a fisherman, farmer, and charcoal and wood exploiter. But Mr Tran’s reputation as a giving and generous man always preceded the fact that he had very little money and worked very hard. After many years of struggle and hardship, he had saved enough money to begin a nearly 20-year project building the Big House (1910-1928), which dedicated for the poor.Mr Tran was a man of great righteousness and generosity. He studied Confucianism and Taoism and created a way of living for himself called Tranism, Tran’s tradition of generosity and giving is still alive after all these years through many generations… The anniversary of Tran’s death is celebrated from the 17th to the 20th days of the second month of the Lunar Calendar when anywhere from 2,000 to 5,000 people from all over the country come to the Big House to burn incense sticks for Mr Tran and pray. The ceremony is simple and patrons eat only rice with salt and rice soup with freshwater fish…” - Vietnam News.
