Travels on the Silk Road:

Dromedars in the oasis of Mary/ Turkmenistan in the middle of the Kara Kum desert. Mary (called Merv in Seljuk times, or Margiana at the time of Alexander "the Great's" destruction) is fed by the Murghab river which changes its course from time to time. Today water from the Amu Darja helps to increase the perimeter of the oasis. More than 20 different cities, spread over 100 km2, have been discovered, unearthed or at least located in the sands of the oasis. One of them, Gonur Tepe turned out to be about 4'000 years old. The part of the Silk Road passing here is supposed to have the same age.

The slide was scanned, hence the grain. Sorry!
