Photographer's Note

If you’re the head of the Chinese delegation you rate an umbrella. The Chinese, after years of persecution religion, have decided that it is a good thing after all. If they control it, that is. Suddenly they are hosting events and sending high powered delegations to Buddhist conferences. Here the head of the Chinese delegation to the International Buddhist Conference in Bangkok, sits next to the head of a Tibetan delegation; the branch under Beijing’s control that is, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, is nowhere to be seen. In the horrendous heat of the afternoon, when even the toughest are wilting, he is one of the few delegates to get his personal sunshade (provided by the communist government, I suspect!). The dictatorship of the preliterate and Nirvana too! Sounds good to me!
