Laos - Ban Komaen - Among the world's oldest tea plantations

Phongsaly in the north of Laos is one of the most famous tea regions of the country.
The world's oldest tea plantations are located here and also across the borders with Myanmar and China (in Yunnan). By old is meant: 400 years old.

The village of Ban Komaen (15 km from Phongsaly) offers the most beautiful views of the tea plantations on the steep slopes.

Between the beginning of November and the second half of March, I traveled through the following countries: Nepal, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, Brunei and back to Thailand.
Sometimes people ask me which country I found the most beautiful. Difficult to tell. I found all these countries very beautiful.
But I can say exactly which country I liked the most. The most agreeable country during this trip was Laos.
I liked it so much that I applied for a visa extension, received it and stayed for a total of 40 days in the country. Never before was I anywhere so long.

I thought Laos was the most unspoiled country on this trip.
By unspoiled I don't mean non-touristy. All the countries I visited on this trip had a lot of tourists and some really an awful lot.
The north of Laos just a little bit less but even there I’ve never been on a place where I was the only foreign visitor (something that I have experienced on certain journeys years ago).
Some of you will remember my opinion on my journey to Vietnam in 2017. Well, the number of foreign visitors in all these countries is something you will have to accept or choose not to visit this part of the world.

What I liked about Laos is the small number of inhabitants (7,45 million people on a total area approximately equal to that of the United Kingdom), small towns, little traffic, still much untouched nature, friendly, helpful and honest residents without being pushy.
Since the country fully chose to attract international tourists you will find affordable, yet decent rooms and eateries everywhere. Phongsali is a bit of an exception to this.
