Photographer's Note

boys will be boys

It doesn’t make any different if they are in this mundane existence or under the shadow of Buddha while leading a religious life. Monks are monks, but boys will always be boys…

On my first evening over Laotian soil, after taking pictures of the sunset over the Patousay Victory Monument, on my way back to hotel, I accidentally got lost into the Vat That Foun Monastery because the property has no fence. Here I have been welcome to their huts and we were chatting away their religious activities, especially the “morning feeding over the streets”.

Before they rushed toward the praying session, I asked if I could take some pictures of them — the young novices. The answer wasn’t only a quick and simple “yes”. When I tried to capture a portrait of this youngster, another monk behind him was pulling my candidate’s ear. Too late, I already pressed the shutter.

It’s a shame that it was too dark at the moment, and I hate to use flash, even though I had one in my backpack.
