Photographer's Note

Two novices have found a quiet place to do their homework in the temple belfry. It was early evening and they were concentration on their studies before the evening chanting. One has his eyes closed in concentration the other has a far-away look in his eyes. It is customary for boys to be ordained as novices (Samanera) before the age of 20. They are addressed as ‘Nan’. Then they are ordained as monks (phra) for a short time after their 20th birthday and before marriage. A boy who had not done this training is called ‘suk’ or raw. That is, not yet finished as a man. Other boys spend many years as a novice and they receive an education, up to BA degree, if the want. Very few actually go on to be life-long monks. The do not have the hard discipline of the monks and have few temple duties.
Most of their day is spent in school work or playing. In this temple there were 6 monks and over 50 novices.
