Photographer's Note

This photograph is taken at JR Harajuku station front. People stand in front of the pedestrian crossing by the waiting for a signal at the place which came out of the wicket of a station. The present station building is the wooden structure completed in 1924, and is the oldest in the wooden station building which is existing in a metropolitan area. Now, about 70,000 persons per day use this station. Although Harajuku was scorched by the air raid on Tokyo in 1945 of the last stage of the war, the barracks "Washington heights" of U.S. Air Force are built after the end of the war at the requisitioned Yoyogi soldier place site, and the stores called Kiddy Land, an oriental bazaar for U.S. Forces soldiers, and its families came to begin business in along Omotesando. Wken it goes into the level of 1960, Tokyo Olympic Games is held by making the neighboring Yoyogi gymnasium etc. into the hall in 1964. Moreover, in this area, it is also these days that the luxury flat was successively built by the "first condominiums boom" accompanying the apartment act enforcement in 1962. It means following in footsteps of a European and American urban life in Japan of the high-growth era. When having entered it in the 1970s, the youth culture centering on a fashion changed in the direction of Shibuya and Harajuku gradually from conventional Shinjuku. "Anan" and "non-no" of the fashion magazines for women started in 1970 which first publication take up Harajuku as a fashon town, and it fellows the young women who stride Harajuku for those magazines. When the 1980s come, the Takeshita street will develop under the influence of Takenoko-zoku (bamboo shoot kids). And, talent shops will increase in number the second half of the 80s. And, the flagship outlet of the overseas famous fashion brand opened one after another in Omotesando in the 1990s, and is continuing its trend now.
