Photographer's Note

Portrait of an Atoni veg vendor, a simple street shot from quick grab at a friendly Inpress market in Kupang, the capital of West Timor Island. I just simply could not let the photographic opportunity pass me by as I was captivated by her textured facial-landscape, distinctive straw hat and sense of authenticity that characterises this place. Her lips' bright and cheery red pigment is a result of continuous betel chewing, a culture amongst the elderly across this island.

The Atoni, predominantly Catholic are one the largest ethnic groups of West Timor whilst the other major group are the Tatum who dominate the eastern region and across the border in the Republic of Timor-Leste, a former Portuguese Colony.
