Photographer's Note

In Java, IndonÚsia, some men are extracting day after day a mere sulphur from an active volcanic cone, the Kiwa Ijen volcano.
They carry the sulphur in cane baskets weighting up to 100 Kg. It is very hard work and their life expectancy averages 40 years old. Though, this raw material provides then with a better wage than many other agricultural works in the region. Workers usually wear a wet cloth on mouth and nose to portect from the acid smoke.
Background is the luminous blue / green sulphur lake which is 200 metres deep and contains approximately 36,000,000 cubic metres of steaming, acid water...
