Karnataka - Hampi - Virupaksha Temple

On one of my previous pictures of Hampi you’ve seen a part of the Virupaksha temple, more specifically its huge main gopura (= gateway tower).

The Virupaksha temple is the only remaining working temple in Hampi and one of the oldest structures. The main gateway tower was built in 1442 and is almost 50 m. high.

The architecture and the many decorations are amazing.
Now I like to present you three pictures I’ve taken on its courtyard. I especially liked the late afternoon light.

One of the structures of the temple has a wonderful ceiling with many panels of Vijayanagara paintings. Of course I’ve taken a picture of it but it’s not of good quality.

For those of you who are interested in Hampi, there’s an interesting website with lots of beautiful photos:

I just heard the sad news about the sandstorms that made many victims in the north and east of India. Hopefully these terrible storms will stop very soon.
