Photographer's Note

A face captured in a crowd of Hindu pilgrims gathered on the sacred hill at Thirukazhikundram in southern Tamil Nadu state. On top of that hill, every day at noon, one or two kites come flying to be fed by a priest. According to the believers they arrive from the holy city of Varanasi in northern India and will then continue to Rameswaram on the southern tip of India. Personally, I think they hang around somewhere nearby until they know it's time for food.

Why the old man looks a bit worried I don't know. I don't think he was disturbed by my presence, or my camera, because I am fairly sure he never noticed me.

In a workshop you can see the priest and a kite on the bare rock on top of the hill. The large crowd of pilgrims were kept at a distance by a fence. I didn't find the feeding ceremony so very interesting, but it was a nice experience to be in that crowd where everyone was in a good mood and made sure I would get a fine view.

A few days ago I posted a picture of pilgrims coming down the steps from that hill, and a ws with the view of the temple compound below the hill.

These pictures were taken in early November 1987 and were scanned from Kodachrome slides.
