Photographer’s Note
The Shami Band, one of many popular brassbands in Calcutta playing on weddings and other social functions, usually on Sundays. I met them in a very busy street as they were preparing to leave for their performance.
This is a photo from 1987 (when Calcutta was still Calcutta), and it was scanned from a Kodachrome slide.

Hi Gert.
Terrific full on capture of this colorful group, all of whom have a different sort of expression. I think the fellow on the right really did your photo a favour by adopting a different stance; his instrument becomes a focal point, as well as the light on his face.
You get great results from your slide scans. In fact your old shots are one of the reasons I dusted off (and literally washed!) some of my ancient slides. You might be interested in my shot from Maymyo, as I know you have also been there.

Andrew

Hej Gertr,
A very fine and colourful picture! Their costumes look like they were inspired from some Swedish dance band from the seventies! Also very interesting instruments, no valves, just natural tones. I guess they were good at playing fanfares.

Hi Gert!
Nice one! Its interesting to realize that this was over 20 years ago, and of course these men are all that much older. That being said, I suppose such a band would look very similar today. Really a lovely photo, with beautiful clarity, and lovely color. Fine work, kind regards,
Steve

every time I hear "kodachrome" I start singing Simon & Garfunkel's song...
I love the vividness and the brilliancy of the colours, and the details have lost none of their sharpness.

Hi Gert, Oh, Calcutta (or Kolkata), fantastic colours in this over 20 years old photo! I also saw such a band playing in Bikaner - it appeared it was a wedding, so I joined the party, it was fun!!

Hi Gert,
Funny how everyone decide to post pictures from India lately.
I lov ethe contrast and saturation of hte color here. The white make the color stand out even more. I like the overall of this photo. But you can also make one of the man on the right who seem to stand out very well by himself. Thanks.

Hej Gert,
An excellent photo. This group of musician was obviously posing for you and it is a funny how stiff they look. A very good documentary even if you could not really guess that it was taken more than twenty years ago. It must be great to have such massive number of photos from the past. TFS and have nice weekend!

Hi Gert
Each member of the band has a different expression and they certainly didn't mind being photographed. No colour has been lost in 22 years. Tfs, Marlene

Hej Gert,
very picturesque band! Did they pose specially for you? it's difficult to guess because one of these guys seems to be looking in the direction of the photographer whereas another one is looking at something (someone?) distant.
The baclground looks a bit too dark -but maybe it's the fault of my PC monitor. Time to buy a Mac! :-|
Kind regards,
Elena
