Photographer's Note

This picture of prayer flags was taken close to the Ganden Monastery in Tibet.

Prayer flags are strips of coloured cloth printed with Buddhist prayers. We find them near the top of passes in the mountains and on houses to purify the air and pacify the gods. When the flags flutter, prayers are thought to be released to the heavens.

The colours have a symbolic :
Red represents the element of Fire,
Green represents the element of Wood,
Yellow represents the element of Earth,
Blue represents the element of Water,
White represents the element of Iron.
