This picture was taken in Xichang in southern Sichuan. In the background is the south gate of the old walled city. The man in the foreground wears typical Mao-era clothes.

(I wonder how much has changed in the meantime.)


Worried Life Blues is a blues standard first recorded by Big Maceo (and Tampa Red) in 1941. It is reported to have been a "big hit", but was released before the charts or similar services began. The song took "Someday Baby Blues" (first recorded by the magnificent Sleepy John Estes in 1935) as a basis. Over the years these two songs have become blurred by various cover versions which use elements from both songs.
