Photographer's Note

Xinjiang, China's "New Frontier," is home to many minority populations representing the neighboring countries in Central Asia, such as Tajikistan. This curious Tajik man approached me as we made a stop off the Karakoram Highway to watch Lamb Polo, the requisite Tajik pastime during weddings and festivals.

The Tajik Autonomous County of Xinjiang is located several hundreds of kilometers south of Kashgar city by way of the Karakoram Highway, near Tashkurgan. The Tajik border is only a short drive away from this southwestern area of Xinjiang, and is void of anything characteristic of China and Han culture and influence, including the language. I can speak Chinese and could not at all communicate with the locals here - it is a foreign language to them. Having traveled around China extensively, this area really made me realize how large and diverse this country really is.
