Photographer's Note

Photo is from the start of the Tiger leaping gorge trek near the town of Qiaotou. As you beging the hike the trail winds along a terraced hillside covered in wheat and some peas. This woman was out picking weeds from the wheat. I was really impressed with the amount of wheat grown in the area. We saw very little rice grown here.

One of the greatest things about the area are the local people. This area of China is home to the Naxi people a minority group in China. This lady is in traditional Naxi dress which is very common to see, most women are dressed as such. The Naxi are an interesting group. They are matriarchal and the men tend to stay at home with their family for their whole lives. They hitch up with a woman provide a child and move on. Many times the child grows up not knowing who dad is.
