Photographer’s Note

During our recent trip in China we were treated to a full solar eclipse. We happened to be in Xidi in southern Anhui at the time. Most of the eclipse zone in China that morning was very cloudy, but we were lucky. And I must say that solar eclipse was a great way to start the day!

Xidi is an exceptionally well preserved village in southern Anhui. Together with neighbouring Hongcun, it has been listed by UNESCO as world heritage.

Huizhou architecture is the predominant style, with white walls, dark tiles, horse-head gables, stone drums or mirrors and open interior courtyards (with 'light wells') being common features.

Contrary to what is written in most guidebooks, it is now perfectly possible to spend the night in both Hongcun and Xidi.

This picture shows the big arch and the fancy hotel near the entrance of town. But I guess it's the sun and moon that steal the show...
