Photographer's Note

This photo was taken at Banteay Srei (the Citadel of Women) during a recent trip to the cities of Angkor and Siem Reap in Cambodia.

This little boy, with a big smile despite his decaying baby teeth, was one of the many children who were playing around this charming 10th century Khmer temple, built largely of hard reddish-brown sandstone that can be carved like wood. The temple's name is attributed to the intricacy of the bas relief carvings on its walls, so delicate that it is believed they could have been carved only by the hands of women.

Resting his head against the wall, this Khmer boy looked beautifully "at home" in his ancient yet familiar surroundings...
