Photographer's Note

I had finished a consulting assignment in Port Moresby, and needed to travel to Glasgow in Scotland. Illogically, I decided to fly by way of Johannesburg, taking a brief holiday in Swaziland. This young man offered to model his role as a traditional Swazi warrior. He wears a loin-cloth and skin about the waist, along with a number of bead ornaments. In the right hand, he holds a knobkieri, carved from a single piece of wood, starting with the head. This can be both a defensive as well as offensive instrument. The weather cooperated that day. This is a scan from a print image.
