Photographer's Note
Roça the name in Portuguese given to the big cacao farms in S. Tomé e Príncipe Islands.
S. Tomé e príncipe was a Portuguese territory since it was discovered, in 1460/1461 until the day of independence the 12th July 1975.
This is a view of the biggest and perhaps the famous roça “Rio D’Ouro”. The name means “Gold River”, due to the fact that the river that crosses the roça and the cacao was the fortune of the farmers.
The cacao production ended at late 1986 and the roça has now and since S. Tomé e Príncipe independence, the name of the 1st President of Angola, Agostinho Neto.
Today is still possible to “feel” the hard work of the “contratados”, i.e., “employees” as the owners call to their slave like workers that were “brought” from Angola, Cape Verde and Guinea the nearest Portuguese territories in Africa before Portugal 1974 revolution.
This road inside the field belongs to the roças it drives you to the main building - The Hospital - a huge construction. It had the finest conditions for white people treatment abd cure. It was completely equipped even with a research center for equatorial diseases as the paludism or malaria a common infectious disease and an enormous public health problem still today.
A ancient local and resident told me that when there was a special surgery to be made it was carried out in this hospital.

Hello Rui,
A road not so much travelled, since it seems like nature is taking it back and covering with grass..!
Any way it makes a strong lead-in, pointing directly to the mansion...
An interesting bit of plantation history!
Greetings,

Good use of perspective to lead the eye into the scene. It might be to do with the light at the time but there seems to be a colour cast. I did try to correct it for a WS but without success. It might be worth you starting with the original.
