Photographer’s Note

No exif datas,it`s a scanned image.
This are the sand dunes of Merzouga,some of them are more than 100 meters high.
Merzouga is about 40km away from Rissani and in 2000 there was no puplic transport.
I`ve heard that there is a paved road to the dunes now.
In the Merzouga oasis are living about 1200 people and close to the dunes there are many hotels,guesthouses and caffes.Many of the hotels were built like kashbas,the traditional architecture.
I did sleep on the roof of one of them for very little money.After sunset it was getting very cold and I needed 3 woolen blankets,but the reward was a wonderful verry clear night-sky with millions of stars.It was getting even better after 10 pm because then there was no more disturbing electric light.
( Electricity is done by generators in Merzouga).
Such a perfect sky I`ve only seen in the Chilean andes again.

Leo,
Very nice photo! Your composition is great showing the hiker and the dunes with deep shadows. The deep shadows create great contrast in this shot. The lighting and colors are great with nice sharpness and DOF.
The blue sky looks wonderful against the red sands.

Hallo Andreas. Für ein gescanntes Bild eine tolle Qualität. Aber auch als Motiv sehr sehenswert. Die Kontraste und Farben machen hier wesentlich den Reiz der Aufnahme aus. Für mich ist aber entscheidend, dass sich auch noch ein leibhaftiger Mensch in dieser Wüste befindet. Ein beeindruckendes Bild. Viele Grüße, Wolfgang.

here you are with the scanned ones. I like that! Beautiful scenary. Nice highlights and shadows and the inclusion of the trekker on the very right side is a good reference for the dimension of the place. Technically as usual: sharpness, DOF, colors, etc, all great. Good job!

Love the color and shadow! I didn't even notice the hiker in the small thumbnail, but it's a nice surprise! :) Sort of finishes off the picture. Good work!

There is always something magical in desert shots, even though the light there can be terribly harsh. This image is no exception, lovely curves and shapes in the dunes. The foreground figure only adds to the depth. Excellent.

What scanner you use? You obtain a great quality of image. I like how the light creates these beautiful shades in the relief of dunes, in a great graphical effect and with a good resistance with the blue sky.
The human presence gives a good reference us of the dimensions of the place.

Hi Leo,

I have been too in Merzouga. that place is magic! I have also suffered from cold in the desert night (I slept in a tent) but the reward was excellent. I love the sense of infinity you can prove in the desert.
Just check my "desert tones" if you like..

Wow! This is a real stunner! The light on the dunes really shows the fantastic shapes and curves very well, and the dunes seem to be matched by the swirling clouds in the sky - a perfect marriage! The person on the right side adds a lot to the scene as it enables us to imagine that we are there, while it also adds a focal point. Superb work!

Hi Andreas,
Another high quality scan from your "oldies" (what model scanner do you have?). The desert looks like an orange coloured ocean with these huge waves rising up towards the sky. The presence of a hiker on the right gives the scale, but it's a pity that the area near the that person's head is just a bit too dark.

A spectacular landscape of Morocco and a beautiful scan, if there were no sky and guy it could well be a big chocolate ice cream macro... but thanks to this viewer it's a nice landscape well introduced by his presence and where the alternances of shade and light combined with the dune curves are very attractive, the sky is fine as well.

hübsche Sandkiste..
Die starken Unterschiede von Licht und Schatten mit dem wellenartigen Dünen geben einen interessanten grafischen Effekt. Sehr gute Farben mit dem Himmel dazu. Und ein nettes menschliches Detail und keine Verschmutzung (kommt ja auch dort vor).

Well, this is the joy of living. You are so lucky to travel to those places and see those wonderful skies. I guess it is a priceless experience sleeping on the roof with three blankets and seeing this dunescape early in the morning. I just envy...

what a beautiful photo of desert!I like very much the patterns of the dunes,and the clouds which have the same curves than these dunes.The colors offer a nice contrast,and the man has a nice place to admire the large panorama.
I went to this place in august 1985,and it was so hot that it was impossible to sleep,but my memory can be wrong.

What a stunning image. The late/early light has made wonderful contrasts on the dunes with wonderful patterns. It was a good idea to include the person both for scale and interest as she is obviously enjoying the view too. The openair rooftop bed sounds like a wonderful experience.

Die Gegend aus der ich komme sieht vollkomen anders aus, sie ertrinkt nahezu im Grün. Beides ist aber sehr eindrucksvoll. Der Mensch in Deinem Foto rückt die Verhältnisse zurecht und zeigt, was wir letztlich sind - Teil der Natur, nicht deren Meister. Das Spiel von Licht und Schatten ist atemberaubend. Ein großartiges Bild!

A magic place, only to be seen with your own eyes. Although a lot of pictures come very close in presenting the endless of the dunes, sitting on a dune yourself and let your thoughts go is the only way to become one with the wonderful landscape.

quite a while since I last visited your gallery and when I opened I saw this piece of art made by the desert and captured by your camera. I love the light and shaded areas of sand, the shapes formed by it, and the sensation that this man is lost on an imense sea of sand.
