Photographer's Note
Akhenaten was the pharaoh who did away with the worship of many Gods and made it official policy to just worship the one God (Atenism). Consequently he made himself many enemies and was referred to as the 'heretic king' after his death in 1336/1334 BC. One of his several female consorts was the well known Nefertiti. Her bust is now in the Berlin Museum.
He has been proven through DNA to be the father of the even more famous Tutankhamen. There are conspiracy theories that Tutankhamun and his wife may have been murdered to end the dynasty and revert Egypt back to polytheism. From Wiki " Akhenaten, Neferneferuaten, Smenkhkare, Tutankhamun, and Ay were excised from the official lists of pharaohs, which instead reported that Amenhotep III was immediately succeeded by Horemheb. This is thought to be part of an attempt by Horemheb to delete all trace of Atenism and the pharaohs associated with it from the historical record." Even his funerary mask and sarcophagus were deliberately destroyed. More information from Wikipedia here:

Hello Chris,
Excellent close-up photo of this pharaoh, we can see every single detail of the ancient stone carvings so well and clearly. The light is excellent too and adds a nice play of light and shadows. Very well captured.

Hi Chris
Combination of light and shadows makes this image look very 3D. Side lighting also brings out the textures and details.
Still, makes me wonder what it would look like, photoraphed in its original location.
Best wishes

Hello Chris,
I have seen many programmes about this part of Egyptian history and there was a definite attempt to remove Akhenaten from the country's history, by countless acts of vandalism!
This is a a wonderful statue and you have captured all the details with excellent clarity.
I marvel at the skill of the ancient sculptors!
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Chris,
If there had been photos in those ancient days the new rulers would have had a lot of work to do to delete the portraits of former Pharaos, like they did in the Soviet Union when Stalin had killed his rivals.
Just a thought that entered my mind when reading your note. This is a good photo from a fine low angle and well managed light.
Kind regards,
Gert

This is an excellent image, the angle you took it from where the crispness of the carving really makes this special. A cracking record shot and great info given as well! Excellent capture, Congrats

Oi, Chris!

Hello Chris,
Do you think Akhenaten was inspired by the Israelites in trying to establish Atenism? Nice close-up of his likeness.

Hi Chris
sadly, when i die, i will just go into the darkness and nobody will remember me like this! haha on the plus side, bc i'm not famous I won't have any enemies.
i wonder how the photo would look in monochrome, of if you de-saturated the yellow tones. still, its very cool to see subjects of history like this. Imagine living in Egypt back then! cool shot
cheers

chris
nice sculpture of this famous pharaoh who modified religion of his nation. in some aspects it was similar that henry VIII did, but I presume the other was much more violent to keep his power. excellent quality of image. I would like to visit egypt, it is one of my main trip projects.
take care
