Photographer's Note

The statue is supposed to show Diogo Afonso, a 15th century Portuguese explorer who was among the first to colonize the Cape Verde islands. His statue is facing the sea in Mindelo, the country's second largest city, on the island of São Vicente in the northwestern part of the archipelago. In the distance you can see Santo Antão, the last island before the long journey across the Atlantic Ocean to the American continents.

I don't know what messages that had been posted on Diogo Afonso's coat or the pedestal, but it could have been "Vote for...", since there had been general elections in Cape Verde about a month earlier.

Here is a larger version.

I will post two workshop photos from the same area, one showing men buying what looks like fresh fish, the other including among other things a large rusty anchor. These photos were all taken with my first digital camera, a Canon Ixus 750.

The approximate map coordinates for these photos are 16.88463 -24.99003, but don't expect the little yellow Google man to be there.
