Default Yes or no?!

I got this message the other day... in short they want to use my pics for free...!, but with my name on...in a website with many hits a day... they say it may be good for advertise my work(i dont really care!! ;D)...
Here the mail for details

Dear Mr L.V.
I am a freelance journalist working for the
Federal Agency for Civic Education in Germany
(www.bpb.de), which promotes awareness for
democracy and participation. www.bpb.de is a
non-commercial website open to everybody.

We are producing an online project about mega
cities, that will portray the 20 biggest mega
cities today.

A friend of mine is a member of Trekearth and so I
got to know about the website. As well as about
your images of Mumbai, like "streets of mumbai".

I would like to ask, if it is possible to use some
of your images of Mumbai for the online dossier.
Unfortunately, there will be no fee for the
pictures but at least some publicity. The website
counts 7 million hits per month. We would publish
the image in the format 160x120 and 640x480. Your
image would be labeled with your name and
copyright. It would be great for visualizing.

I am looking forward to your reply. And I am happy
to answer any questions.

Greetings from Cologne,
Sonja
Any ideas , advices ?
Laurent

Laurent, it sounds like a come-on but what is to lose? Maybe someone will like your work so well that they make you an offer you can't refuse and you end up a rich free lance photographer.

I know that I did not offer any useful advice but good luck just the same.

Greg

Hi Laurnet. What harm can it do? and it might get your work some extra exposure. I would give it a go. I just said OK to a website in Poland, along the same lines. In the end, it's better to be seen than unseen. Salut kevin

I would say no. They sure are a public institution that has a budget to run and I am pretty sure the project has also one. One cannot allow that they keep on thinking they can use free pictures every time. They should have included the photography in the project's budget and pay for it. Does this journalist works there for free? Quality needs to be paid. After all, Germany is not particularly a third world country. Their citizens pay taxes for things like this. Hey, but that's me. :) Stay safe, l.

I support Luis' opinion.
I surfed a bit on their site and saw they sell publications, why don't they give them away for free ?

7 million hits a month, pure commercial if you ask me. So my answer would be no.

I would offer them a small thumbnail for free with copyright, url link and credits but for a larger size they must pay.

If you say you never thought about it in selling your work, than the answer would also be no. Because when you don't want to make a profit why would you give them a chance to do so.

A small amount each month for a serious image at 640x480 would be very nice....for them and also for you..!!!

Have a nice weekend,

Henk

third party to make money on my pictures!

right you are, had that experience before, even help-organisation give their co-operators a salery and saw support vanishing in personal aims, the best help is still done by your own hands but that cost you an effort:).

Had once a request of an Tamil TV-station for a few photos LOW budget, later I heard it was meant to blow up at 30 on 40 feet ... I adviced them to ask a pro :) ... maybe I'm not that bussines minded which seems to me more a burdon, all reward goes back from where it comes but still a correct appreciation is only a decent form of respect for your hobby wich doesn't come neither by itself.

I don't say it seems spam but such requests are promising heaven for nothing :)

Citation "
Jean Louis.
Thanks for the photograph and the permission to use it.
If you would like a copy of the book with the picture in it please just send me your postal address." Fin de citation.
J'ai envoyé mon adresse depuis déjà longtemps...
Jean Louis.
