Great feather 2009-12-21 13:33

Difficult to imagine this was taken around the time of the summer solstice. It's a wierd and interesting old tree, but it seems quite blurred. Not sure if that is as a result of the scan.

Default To feather: Reduction from 3000 ppi to 72 ppi

Hi, Kath -

The scan was done by ScanCafe, which generally did a decent job. But it's still a scan. Also, they produce a file at 3000 ppi, and for web purposes I reduced that to 72 ppi, which may account for it.

Crater Lake is known for late, heavy snow. When I took this picture, 3-4 days after the summer solstice, only half of the rim road was open; the other half was still under around 18 feet (6 meters) of snow. I've been there in August, and there were still patches of snow on the ground.
