Great mcmtanyel 2017-01-22 20:12

Hello Stephen,
I have not studied French, so I first thought this was the Mairie School. Then google translated "mairie ecole" as town hall. But I am confused, the right gate is for boys and the left gate is for girls. Why would a town hall separate its gates for boys and girls, rather than for men and women? So, what is this, really?
Regards,
MT

Default To mcmtanyel: Mairie ecole

Hello Murat,

As is often the case in small French villages, the same building is/was used for the Mairie or Town Hall and the village school. At the time this was built, boys and girls were segregated in the classroom and in many cases entered the school through different entrances. I do not believe that segregation by sex continues in practice.

Thanks for looking,
Kind regards, Stephen
