Needs Improvement kevinos 2011-04-30 3:37

This is a rather characterless modern building, with nothing special to recommend it, and placing this symmetrical building bang in the center hardly amounts to composition at all. With a POV placed squarely in front, it is about the least imaginative composition possible. The exposure looks like what one comes up with, if one uses auto exposure on such a contrasty subject: neither fish nor foul. The white of the building looks underexposed (as confirmed by coppying it into photoshop and dropping it a stop, where the colour of the church proves to have been a warmish cream with surface detail) and the trees look underexposed , with resultant loss of detail, producing an ‘unhappy’ medium. The sky is nicely darkened, but the rest of the colour is poor and unnatural.
I suppose, the sparkle coming from the cross, is the reason for making the picture, but it hardly seems to make to this subject worthwhile.

Sorry if this sounds negative, but at one time, T.E was a place where people who were serious about their work, received serious and honest critiques from their friends. This help every to improve and develop. I fear that, with the best will in the world, few of the critiques of your friends is going to help anyone develop

Yes, Barbara, this site is not for professionals, but it is for serious photographers, who genuinely want to improve. And honest critiques help far more helpful than gangs of friends who will tell you that your picture is wonderful, in exchange for you telling them the same about their poor work. If we want to improve we need fewer insincere flattering critiques and more honest comments. Sorry about my lecturing attitude, but I have looked at a lot of photos, in my life, some good, some rotten (Including my own failures) in friendship, peace and love to you, may you develop into a great photographer. May you listen to the voices who really want to help But remember insincere flattery will never advance you.
